Call for volunteers and Board Members:

Would you like to make a difference in your community by serving a worthy cause? The House by the Side of the Road is looking for volunteers and Board Members to join our 100% volunteer organization. Please consider joining us and encourage those you think would be interested in serving with us to reach out to housebyroad@gmail.com to express interest or ask questions about participation.

House by the Side of the Road is a 501(c)(3) organization, located in Ann Arbor, whose purpose is to provide FREE clothing and small household items to children and adults in need.  People come to us after family breakup, job loss, fire, or prolonged illness. We also serve those who are homeless, those who are reentering society from prison, people with mental health issues, recent immigrants, and migrant workers.

Prospective volunteers and Board Members with varying skills, expertise, and availability (virtual or in-person) are all welcomed to serve. At this time, we are particularly in need of individuals who may be able to help with any of the following. This list is not exclusive:

  • light clerical and scheduling assistance with clients;
  • community outreach and relationship building;
  • fundraising and event planning;
  • house management and client services (mainly daytime hours weekdays).


We are also looking for a board member with grant-writing abilities. Please note that Board Members are expected to attend monthly Board Meetings (currently via Zoom). Board Members are unpaid volunteers.

If you or your organization are interested in service projects, we welcome your interest. High School students are also welcome to volunteer!​

If you are not able to donate your time as a volunteer or Board Member but would still like to support our organization, we will be glad to accept any monetary donation you are able to give at this time. We accept checks made out to House by the Side of the Road, or cash, both delivered to us at 2051 S. State Street Ann Arbor MI 48104.
